Description
Surveillance systems
to collect and check business data in retail environments, which can be
used for market research, to optimise operations, investigation of peak
times, as well as the assessment of suspicious situations. For this class
of applications 100% automation is not required since competing techniques
for counting people moving past a certain point or estimation of traffic
(manual counting or magnetic barriers) do not exceed 90% reliability and
statistically data is sufficient.
Large numbers of overhead cameras have already been installed for manual monitoring purposes. Watching the images directly is time consuming, and it is often difficult for the observer to concentrate over a long period of time. Alternatively these cameras could in principle form the basis of a cost-effective and robust solution. However the quality of the images provided is not always suitable. Changing illumination, occlusion, reflections, changing foreground and background conditions in the scene often make great demands on the image processing algorithms.
Uses CORBA architecture
