Biographical Sketch
Majid Mirmehdi's interest in computer vision began in 1991 with his PhD on the parallelisation of vision algorithms. Following that, he worked as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing at Surrey University. In 1997, he was appointed a Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science at Bristol University and became a Senior Lecturer in 2002. He serves on the Executive Committee of the British Machine Vision Association and is a member of the Technical Committee of the International Association of Science and Technology for Development. He organised and co-chaired the 11th British Machine Vision Conference in 2000 and is on the program committee of several international conferences. He is the Publicity Chair of ICPR2004. His interests in computer vision include motion analysis and tracking, industrial inspection, colour image segmentation, optimisation techniques, medical image analysis, and many more. He has published over 80 refereed journal and conference publications.

University of Bristol (Computer Vision Group)
The Computer Vision Group in the Department of Computer Science at Bristol University is over 15 years old. The group resides in the Merchant Venturers Building and comprises of 20 members: 4 Academics, 4 Research Fellows, and 12 PhD Students. It is headed by Professor Barry Thomas. The other academic staff are Dr. Majid Mirmehdi, Dr Andrew Calway and Dr. Neill Campbell. There are also numerous visiting researchers and associate members such as Dr. Alan Chalmers, the Vice-President of SIGGRAPH who is also a member of the Computer Science Department.

The group has developed strong links with industry and government research laboratories including British Aerospace, Hewlett-Packard Research Labs, Surface Inspection, and the media-rich neighbourhood in Bristol including the BBC, Granada, Films @59 and many more.

The main research interests are in motion analysis and scene evolution understanding, industrial inspection, medical image processing, natural scene classification, neural networks, and the interface with Computer Graphics.
