Biographical Sketch
Pascal Fua joined the faculty of EPFL in 1996.He is now a Professor in the School of Computer and Communication Science and heads the Computer Vision Lab. Before that, he worked at SRI International and at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis as a computer scientist. He holds a degree from Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Orsay. His research interests include optimization-based techniques for image processing and synthesis, the use of information theory in the area of model-based vision and the design and implementation of systems for vision and simulation. He is currently involved in a number of IST European Project and has (co)authored over 100 publications in refereed journals and conferences.

Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL)
Research at EPFL's Computer Vision Laboratory (CVlab) focuses on modeling people and their motion from images and video sequences. Deriving human body shape and motion from image-data is an inherently difficult task. The body is very complex. The data is often incomplete, imprecise or, even, full of errors. We therefore develop techniques that use sophisticated human animation models to fit such noisy and incomplete data. We use facial and body animation models, not only to represent the data, but also to guide the fitting process, thereby substantially improving performance. Applications range from surveillance to medicine, from augmented reality simulations to ergonomics analysis and from special effects to popular entertainment.
