An example of artificial oculomotor behavior

ABSTRACT

We propose to formalize an artificial oculomotor behavior based on ``saccades'' and ``smoothpursuit'' to be used when detecting or tracking moving targets, and during an artificial head motion. Two degrees of freedom are used in synergy (eye and neck). We develop here the ``oculomotor'' layers of such a system, while the ``visual'' layers of this sensorymotor reflex are supposed to be provided. Contrary to previous approaches, the different behaviors are generated from a single mechanism using a statistical observer (Linearized Kalman Filter) and a suboptimal controller. Simulations and experimental data are provided.
